Norwich has been chosen to be the first city to implement the new food hygiene ratings and business merit listings system. This was put in place on September 15th and is controlled by Food Standards Agency (FSA). These new ratings will then be nationalised at a later date.
I love food and I love to eat out (money permitting) so on finding out about this i was eager to see how my favourite Norwich restaurants faired.
Let’s look at how the ratings work first. The food hygiene ratings are simple to understand. It’s worth bearing in mind that the figures do cover three disciplines though (so it’s not just an indication of a dirty kitchen!):
- food hygiene
- structure and cleanliness
- confidence in management
Basically i wouldn’t consider going to anything with a 0. I’d also think twice about anything from 1 to 2.
I was going to sort and list all the restaurants here but seeing as they’re likely to change their ways it’s unfair. Instead i’ll point out some shockers below from the Norwich restaurant ratings list:

To see a list of updated food safety ratings see the full list of Norwich ratings on the Norwich City Council website. The full list also contains business merit listings which show whether the company uses local produce, allows breastfeeding, provides healthier meals and has wheelchair access. The list also has full expection reports (in PDF) and right to reply options so that owners can ask for rating to be reviewed should there be an update.
Let’s hope some of the restaurants above take action to get up to speed!

Is there a similar list for restaurants outside of the city but still in Norfolk?

Not that i know of. This is just a pilot of the new system on Norwich establishments. The new food safety system will be nationalised eventually, although i’m not entirely sure when. More delving on the FSA website shows that individual local authorities are responsible for the hygiene of restaurants, etc. The FSA site has a way to find your local “food standard enforcer” in your area on their site.

By the end of the year all the Norfolk authorities should have a scheme running. North Norfolk and Gt Yarmouth have their own schemes. Broadland; South Norfolk; Breckland; Kings Lynn and Norwich will all be using the National scheme.

Thank you for this feedback. It’s through the general public making choices about where they eat and buy food that will drive up standards. Our previous scheme has already lead to big improvements and I’m sure our joining the Food Standards Agency’s national Food Hygiene Rating Scheme will bring even better results.
The national scheme has been available to view since October 2010 but officially launches on Tuesday 30 November. By June next year there will be an estimated 167 Local Authorities who will have joined the national scheme and even more that will come on stream after that. The idea is that we have the national FHRS in place in time for the 2012 olympics.
Thanks for your support and interest

Hi Chris,
Thanks for adding a comment. That’s great news on other authorities joining the scheme soon.

Thanks, for the information
Is there any option for businesses to display their 5 star rating on their establishment? This would help boost their trade and also educate the public too.

Hi Sparky
All businesses receive a certificate and a window sticker to display. If you don’t see a sticker ask the business why they are not displaying it.

I’ll have to look out for it. Thanks
